Manchester offers presentation on refugee experience in Indiana

North Manchester, IN (09/03/2024) — Manchester University will welcome Dr. Jyotika Saksena and Dr. Shannon McMorrow for "Through Their Eyes," a presentation about their work with refugee women in Indiana on Monday, Sept. 9.

The presentation will be held at 11 a.m. in Wine Recital Hall at the North Manchester campus. It is free and open to the public.

Saksena is a professor of international relations at the University of Indianapolis. McMorrow is an associate professor at West Michigan University's School of Interdisciplinary Health Programs. In 2023, Saksena and McMorrow began a study on how female Congolese refugees adjusted to life in Indiana. This research developed into a project featuring photographs taken and captioned by the women they worked with using a methodology called PhotoVoice. The women were tasked with taking photos of things in their lives that made them feel strong emotions, allowing them to capture their experiences and tell their stories through a visual medium. The photos were exhibited at the Circle City Industrial Center in Indianapolis.

An exhibit of the PhotoVoice project will be displayed in Link Gallery outside Wine Recital Hall for the entire fall semester.

This presentation is part of Manchester's Values, Ideas and the Arts (VIA) program, a public convocation series.
