Manchester University Ratified for NAIA Membership; A Win for Spartan Student-Athletes and Families

Manchester University has been officially ratified for membership in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) following a vote on September 27, 2026. Manchester University will complete the 2026-27 season in NCAA Division III and begin NAIA competition on July 1, 2027, with affiliation in the Crossroads League Conference.

Throughout this process, we were looking for partners who share our values and our belief that athletics should be an extension of an institution's educational mission. We are thrilled to join the Crossroads League and look forward to the opportunities this will create for our student-athletes and the entire Manchester community,"said MU president Stacy Young.
The move positions Manchester University to offer athletic scholarships beginning with student-athletes enrolling for Fall 2027, opening a clearer, affordable path to a private college education for talented athletes. Competing in the Crossroads League Conference also emphasizes a regional schedule, bringing more home contests to North Manchester and more chances for local families, youth teams, and alumnae to cheer on the Spartans.
In addition to a heightened sense of regionalized travel, this impactful move also paves the way for Spartan Athletics to announce its intention to roster additional varsity teams in women's flag football to complement the existing sport offerings of cross country, track and field, tennis, wrestling, basketball, soccer, baseball, swim/diving, softball, volleyball, football and co-ed cheer.
The NAIA's Champions of Character framework - integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship, and servant leadership - aligns with Manchester's mission of providing a holistic student experience and graduating persons of ability and conviction. Student-athletes will continue to develop confidence and leadership through Manchester's small classes, personalized mentorship, and signature programs like business, peace studies, internships, and community partnerships across Wabash County.

What's Changing and What Isn't
- 2026-27 academic year: No changes to the current year. MU competes in NCAA Division III as planned.
- 2027-28 academic year: Manchester University begins competition in the NAIA effective July 1, 2027. Coaches may extend athletic scholarship offers to student-athletes enrolling Fall 2027 and beyond in accordance with NAIA rules.
- Student experience: A more regional schedule means more local rivalries and more opportunities for Manchester families to attend games.
- Academics first: Manchester's rigorous classroom experience and faculty mentorship remain the foundation of the student-athlete journey.
