Garrett High School senior earns MU Multicultural Excellence in Leadership scholarship

North Manchester, IN (03/25/2024) — Kyana Martinez, a senior at Garrett High School in Garrett, Ind., is the 2024 recipient of Manchester University's Multicultural Excellence in Leadership (MCEL) scholarship.

The MCEL scholarship is awarded to an exceptional student who identifies as a racial or ethnic minority and has demonstrated a strong commitment to promoting diversity within their community. This scholarship is renewable each year for four years, and covers tuition, fees, and on-campus room and meal plan expenses. One MCEL scholarship is awarded each year.

"Kyana connects a lot of her personal growth and goals to her family, who have been directly impacted by the struggles and lack of resources for immigrants," said Brandi Chauncey, director of admissions at Manchester University. "She has excitement to bring more awareness to the Office of Multicultural Affairs and to the diverse student population at Manchester."

Martinez was drawn to Manchester because of its small, tight-knit community. She plans to study business management and marketing to support her family's business. Her father is a co-owner of Northeast Indiana Roofing. "I would love to give back in any way I can due to the support and efforts they have shown me all these years," she said.

"Earning this scholarship means the absolute world for both me and my family," Martinez said. "It is undoubtably life-changing and there are not enough words to express my gratitude to my teachers and counselors who have supported me throughout my high school career, and for my amazing family who have shed blood, sweat and tears to make sure that I had every opportunity in hand throughout my life."
