MU holds professional development session for area educators

North Manchester, IN (12/12/2024) — Manchester University hosted 30 local educators for the first session in its professional development series focused on the science of reading in early childhood education on Saturday, Dec. 7.

The session was led by Tracy Walda, literacy coach for the University's recently-opened literacy lab. The lab is a collaborative learning space where young students receive reading support from MU teacher candidates.

The session explored effective strategies to support literacy development in young children, covering the science of reading, early literacy, and application in the classroom. Educators came from more than five northern Indiana communities.

"By equipping early childhood educators with professional development and effective instructional practices, we empower them to bring impactful strategies directly into their classrooms," said Walda. "Through this session, we were able to provide foundational early literacy skills that are critical for children, as they lay the groundwork for a child's lifelong learning and development. We provided a collaborative space for educators to connect, learn, and share ideas strengthening literacy instruction."

The second part of this session will be held on Saturday, Feb. 1 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. If you are interested in joining, registration is open here. More professional development sessions will be announced at a later date.
