MU Doctor of Physical Therapy program granted Candidate for Accreditation status

North Manchester, IN (11/15/2023) — Manchester University's Doctor of Physical Therapy program has been granted Candidate for Accreditation status by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE).

Graduation from a physical therapist education program accredited by CAPTE is necessary for eligibility to sit for the licensure examination, which is required in all states.

"I'm proud of the hard work from everyone involved in building the curriculum and preparing for the October site visit," said W. Thomas Smith, dean of health sciences and pharmacy. "We are pleased with CAPTE's decision and look forward to welcoming our first cohort of students next May."

In an email to students and colleagues in October, Smith said that there are already 28 students in the queue for the program, which is 70% of the total admission goal.

While most DPT programs require nine semesters (36 months), Manchester's program is designed to be completed in eight semesters (30 months). In addition, MU students will pay lower fees when they go for clinical rotations. This saves tuition costs and its graduates will join the workforce sooner.

Manchester's DPT program is located at the Fort Wayne location, which is currently undergoing a nearly $20 million expansion, adding more than 32,000 square feet to the existing facility. Construction is scheduled to be completed in the fall of 2024.

Another review by CAPTE for full accreditation status will take place after the first cohort graduates.

Manchester also offers an undergraduate major in pre-physical therapy.
